A Legacy of Innovation – The History of TVS Motor Company

Founded by T. V. Sundaram Iyengar, TVS has its roots in the early 20th century. Born in 1877 in Thirukkurungudi, located in present-day Tamil Nadu, he launched Madurai’s first bus service in 1911. This marked the beginning of his venture into transportation with the establishment of T.V. Sundaram Iyengar and Sons Ltd, which later evolved into Southern Roadways Limited, operating a large fleet of trucks and buses.

After his passing in 1955, his sons expanded the business into multiple automotive domains including vehicle finance, insurance, and manufacturing of two-wheelers, tyres, and various components. A major milestone came in 1978 when TVS set up a manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, and introduced TVS 50—India’s first two-seater moped—in 1980.

TVS-Suzuki Collaboration and the Rise of TVS Motor

TVS entered into a 19-year partnership with Japanese automaker Suzuki, leading to the formation of TVS-Suzuki. This collaboration brought forth popular bikes like the Suzuki Samurai, Shogun, and Fiero, developed with technology tailored for the Indian market. In 2001, the partnership ended, and the company was rebranded as TVS Motor Company.

TVS Racing and Global Recognition

In 2015, TVS Racing made history by becoming the first Indian factory team to participate in the prestigious Dakar Rally, known for its extreme endurance challenges. The team partnered with French manufacturer Sherco, forming the Sherco TVS Rally Factory Team, further solidifying TVS’s presence on the international motorsports stage.
